Chag Chanukah Sameach!

Dear Friend,

We are now celebrating the 8 days of Chanukah – the Jewish Festival of Lights. This is a very important holiday, although not particularly religious, but nonetheless one that Jews of all ages treasure dearly.

As we all know, Chanukah can have different meanings to different people. To some, it is a Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. To others, it is one of the most festive Jewish celebrations with family, friends, food, gifts, and games.

To me, it is all of the above, plus a perfect opportunity to share some of the best of the holiday’s humor:

  1. Miriam goes to the post office to buy stamps for her Chanukah cards one year. She says to the cashier: “Please may I have 50 Hanukkah stamps?”

    The cashier asks: “What denomination?”

Miriam says: “Oy vey, has it come to this? Okay, give me 6 Orthodox, 12 Conservative, and 32 Reform.”

  2. During the first day of Chanukah, two elderly Jewish men were sitting in a wonderful deli frequented almost exclusively by Jews in New York City. They were talking amongst themselves in Yiddish – the colorful language of Jews who came over from Eastern Europe. A Chinese waiter, only lived one year in New York, came up and in fluent impeccable Yiddish asked them if everything was okay and if they were enjoying the holiday. The Jewish men were dumbfounded. “Where did he ever learn such perfect Yiddish?” they both thought. After they paid the bill they asked the restaurant manager, an old friend of theirs, “Where did our waiter learn such fabulous Yiddish?” The manager looked around and leaned in so no one else will hear and said… “Shhhh. He thinks we’re teaching him English.”

Rabbi Shlomi Lights Chanukah Candle at the 10th Annual Chanukah Celebration

On Sunday, December 18th, the Chabad Taipei Jewish Center kicked off Chanukah celebrations at the Uni-President Department Store located near Taipei City Hall. Holiday latkes, donuts, and more were served, while our younger guests also enjoyed cheerful games and entertainment. It was a wonderful evening to remember, full of laughter and joy from all backgrounds Jewish and non-Jewish alike.

Many thanks to our local community for coming out to join the festivities! Chag Chanukah Sameach! May the light of the Chanukah Menorah bring lots of happiness to you!

Parents of the Taipei American School Monthly Luncheon

The JCC was thrilled to host such a festive luncheon for the Taipei American School group of creative guests! Who knew an afternoon filled with crafting holiday wreaths could be so fun! Especially when complemented with delightful kosher cuisine from our Kosher Culinary Lab.

Everyone’s work was stunning and we are so pleased to have been able to provide a unique space for you all to enjoy and get in the holiday spirit. We look forward to seeing you again for the next monthly luncheon!

In closing, we would like to thank you all for your continued support this year. The JCC is looking to increase our services and to continue extending our reach into the local community as well as the global Jewish community in 2023. We truly value your support and look forward to continuing to serve you all in the coming year!

May this New Year be filled with health and happiness for you and your family. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from the JCC to you!
