Celebrating Diversity

I have found over the years that Asians in general are not anti-Semitic and, in fact, they have a very positive impression of Jews. I believe much of this comes from the large percentage of accomplished Jews on so many levels, as compared to their relatively small share of the total population. In medicine, banking, government, science, hi-tech, culture, and the arts, one sees many notable Jews making substantial contributions.

I often hear people say the reason that Jewish people are so successful is because they are “united” on all fronts. It’s nice that they have this impression, but in fact I do not see it that way. “United,” yes, of course, in the face of a “common enemy.” But as the old saying goes, if there are two Jews in a room, you’ll hear at least 3 different opinions.

To me, it is this diversity of thought, ideas, manners, and goals in life that makes the Jews such a formidable force for progress and good in the world. We are not a group that allows itself to be dictated by one person, or one way of thinking. We crave creativity and seek new answers to old questions. We are constantly challenging the status quo.

We cherish diversity in our Jewish community in Taiwan and abroad, and we celebrate the ability to express different ideas and viewpoints, as long as they are for the overall betterment of the Jewish community, and for the world in general.

The Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association (JTCA) honors and respects all other Jewish groups in Taiwan, including non-Jewish groups that support the Jews and Israel. We encourage everyone that supports the Jews and Israel to continue to work in pursuit of their diverse missions. The more internally diverse and externally united we are, the stronger we will be.

The JTCA welcomes all Jewish groups to use the facilities of the new Center based on their needs and our ability to serve. We also are willing to participate in and help with the endeavors of any group whose initiatives are aligned with overall Jewish values, and which are focused on serving the Jewish community in Taiwan and throughout the world.
