Israel’s newly-elected President Isaac Herzog recently sent a message of support and good wishes to the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association (JTCA), and the Jewish community of Taiwan. In his message, delivered by email to Jeffrey D. Schwartz, Founder and Chairman of the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association, President Herzog delivered the following message:
Shalom Jeffrey,
Thank you for your kind wishes of a few weeks back.
Three years after assuming Chairmanship of the Jewish Agency of Israel, the historic organization which laid the foundation for the State of Israel, I feel exceedingly privileged and profoundly humbled for having been elected 11th President of the State of Israel—land of my forefathers, land of my sons.I wish you great success with JTCA, please convey my sincere regards to the Jewish community of Taiwan.
Shabbat Shalom from Jerusalem,
Isaac Herzog
Chairman of the Executive
The Jewish Agency for Israel
President-elect Herzog, who will be inaugurated as Israel’s 11th President on July 9, succeeds Reuven Rivlin, who has served as President since 2014.
Herzog comes from a family of prominent political and religious leaders in Israel. His father General Chaim Herzog served two terms as the sixth President of Israel from 1983 to 1993. His paternal grandfather Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, was the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland from 1922 to 1935, and Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel from 1936 to 1959.
Prior to his election, President-elect Herzog was Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Israel, the Jerusalem-based nonprofit organization that has design and delivered numerous programs to build the State of Israel since its founding.
The Jeffrey D. Schwartz family and the JTCA have donated significant funds over the years to the Jewish Agency through its international fund-raising arm, Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal (UIA). Most recently, JTCA donated US$50,000 to provide safe accommodations, transportation, and hot meals to hundreds of recent immigrants (“olim” in Hebrew) from Ethiopia.
Jeffrey D. Schwartz said, “From all of us at the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association, and on behalf of the Jewish community of Taiwan, we wish President Herzog success as he assumes the role of President of the State of Israel. We will provide whatever support we can to further the goals of building a prosperous and peaceful home for the Jewish people and for all citizens of Israel.”
